ArtistŐs Statement Growing up, I was
surrounded by artists. My mother and brothers were working artists, and I was
given the time, as well as the inspirational backdrop of the undeveloped Gulf
Coast of Florida, to explore, imagine and create. The untouched beauty of the
golden coastal lakes, transparent, turquoise ocean, and shimmering white
sculpted sand dunes, taught me to value the solitude needed to nurture my
imagination and creativity. Art became a language with
which I could communicate what my heart held. Through my work, I explore my
relationship to the world and express feelings through universal themes and
ideas that present themselves to me visually long before I understand them
with words. Wonder, joy, release, love and longing are a few ideas that
reoccur in my work as I respond to the world around me. Janet Fagan-Smith grew
up on the shores of Walton County, Florida, and has enjoyed living in Seattle
since 1998. Educated at the Ringling School of Art and Design, The
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the University of Pennsylvania, Janet
focused on Painting, Printmaking, and Folklore. When Janet is not working in
her studio, she also teaches drawing and painting, and enjoys playing the
fiddle in a Contra Klezmer band, and as part of a four-piece Gypsy-Funk band,
the ŇCatbirdsÓ. Janet is represented by Gallery Fraga on Bainbridge Island,
The Blue Horse Gallery in Bellingham, and Bohemia Gallery in Ashland, Oregon.
